A True Local
Challenge:
The brief centred on creating a space that felt inclusive and approachable, capable of handling high daily trade while remaining comfortable at quieter times. Key objectives included, improving the usability and appeal of the courtyard and interior spaces, supporting a wide demographic of patrons within a bustling suburban setting
Enhancing durability and ease of maintenance for long-term operation. Delivering upgrades that could be staged over time without disrupting trade
Solution:
Our approach balanced practicality with warmth. Internally, we refined layouts and finishes to improve circulation, visibility, and comfort, while retaining the character of the tavern. The courtyard refurbishment played an important role in expanding usable space, creating a flexible outdoor area that could adapt to Christchurch’s changing seasons and varying patron numbers.
Result:
The Harewood Tavern continues to operate as a successful suburban hospitality venue, well-suited to its community and location. The design supports daily service, peak trading periods, and future upgrades, ensuring the tavern can evolve alongside its neighbourhood. This project reflects Element 17’s strength in hospitality environments that prioritise function, compliance, and long-term performance—creating spaces that feel welcoming, work efficiently, stand the test of time and create a strong return on investment.
