Waffle Haus takes on the Colombo

Posted July 24, 2025

After four years on New Regent Street, Waffle Haus has taken the leap into a quaint kiosk at the Colombo. After searching for the perfect second spot for years, owner Jamie trusted Element 17 with the challenge of translating the mint chocolate haze of the original location into just 18 square meters, without compromising style or brand personality - and we think we've risen to the task.

With the original Waffle Haus being the winner of the Colour Maestro award at the Resene Total Colour Awards in 2021, we knew we wanted the kiosk to be the "little brother" of New Regent. By using funky paint colours and a generous sprinkle of creativity, we created a space that's both charming and cost-effective. The chocolate river flowing through mint green creates a dreamlike experience akin to the sweet nostalgia of Willy Wonka, and this aspect of the design has become a huge part of the Waffle Haus brand.

Fitting everything into a space just a fifth of the size was not just a visual design challenge, but a practical one. In such a small space, every centimetre of surface has a purpose. As more equipment continued to arrive during the fitout, ensuring a comfortable work environment for staff that doesn't feel overcrowded was always a top priority. This required us to get creative with the nooks and crannies of the kiosk, imagining how it will be used on a day to day basis. All of this while trying to keep the noise down while working in the middle of a food court!

We'd like to say a huge thanks to Jamie for trusting us on this project, and becoming a good mate of ours over the years. We're wishing him the best of luck in his new business venture! If you're craving a top notch waffle and a touch of magic in your day, head over to Waffle Haus today - you won't be disappointed.
