After a tip off and recommendation from a business associate we fell into the motivated and warm lap of Element 17.

Our brief was to create two state of the art boutique cinemas situated at 26 Rolleston Avenue at the Christchurch Arts Centre whilst recognizing, embellishing the significant cultural and heritage values of that site and it’s interface with our dream to replace the Academy Cinema taken away from us in the 2011 earthquake.

From the get- go Steve was in and thereafter a trip to China for fixtures and fittings was organized to get the project rolling, it helped immensely to have his knowledge of the bread basket over there, agents, pricing discussions, shipping, translators went very smoothly. The result of that trip was a huge success for us with regard to the choice available and favourable price points. Lest it be said, a cinema operation requires many threads and much knitting to make the Lumiere ‘battle ready’ in a very competitive market, I think we exceeded that ten- fold, not only by our own standards but the reception of the public to it’s look and feel.

I met Steve 8 years ago when the planning stages of Pub on Wharf were in progress, since then I have used Element 17 for other projects including the recently completed Muskets and Moonshine. This venue was purchased as a run down night club and had many alterations throughout the years leaving it in a sad state. After nearly a year of planning a layout, gaining consents with a difficult council and a large drop in budget we managed to renovate the venue to a level that now leaves no trace of what was there in the past while keeping it’s old world charm and breathing new life into the venue. 

Throughout the challenges of this renovation I had constant talks with Steve and his team as the the build was on a very tight timeframe and a lot of “discoveries” needed to be sorted quickly, this is where I believe Steve and his team and contacts are far superior to many companies as they understand the cost and budgets involved plus the need to get jobs done quickly so the venues can reopen and start making money.

Element 17 were able to provide excellent project management on all aspects of the interior design from the selection of colours and fittings to office furniture. They were also instrumental in getting things right in the public work areas such as the layout for the drop-in workspaces. This involved maximising the effectiveness of the space available and managing to incorporate a stylish but business like look in the centre with the use of appropriate furnishings utilising our corporate colours.

They also created a custom design for the i-SITE reception desk which sits harmoniously within the business centre.

This was a complex project, juggling requirements for our own staff offices as well as the i-SITE and business centre in the public areas. Nonetheless we found Element 17 extremely easy to deal with. Their expertise was key in getting the interior absolutely right and they were flexible, responsive and able to adapt to changing requirements.

First impressions are key in any successful restaurant and the look and feel of the venue is obviously crucial and we couldn’t be happier with our brand new burger joint.

Steve and the team at Element 17 created an award-winning interior for me that represents the quality of food and service we have become known for. The use of colour, design and unique finishes has meant people come to not only experience the culture of our cuisine, but also the interior they dine in. We chose E17 from a short list of four design companies mainly because of their friendly, approachable, nothing's a problem attitude. Element 17 gave me input on my scope before I awarded the contract, they were willing to add value upfront.
