The question gets asked of us constantly.  What is better?  Open plan or individual offices? I have come to the conclusion that it is really down to the culture of the organisation and the individuals working habits and what business you are in.  We fitted out a software development company where our client requested we give them an office per two developers.  That meant we created 52 offices and that drove the cost of the fitout up, but did it increase productivity?  Our client knew that the answer for them internally is yes.  In turn we have done other software development companies that go open plan as the developers put on their headphones and concentrate on their screens. We have planned open plan lawyers offices that reduced the hierarchy between partners, associates and pa's and changed the culture to a warmer environment.

So whatever you think it pays to get a perspective of what you are trying to achieve, who you are and what you want.  if you think there is a wrong or right answer to open plan..well there really isn't one.  If you want to read a bit more science to the two views have a look at articles on the two following links.
